AN EXPLORATION OF AFRICAN CULTURE AND EXPRESSION THROUGH THE LENS OF AFRICAN YOUTH ENTERING ADULTHOOD IN AUSTRALIA.

This project was birthed during my time in Australia from 2018-2020. I came to Australia with little to know knowledge of their culture let alone the existence of Black culture in a predominantly white country. Through my own journey of self-exploration and my need for community, I stumbled upon a vibrant, diverse, and growing African community. Most of them first and second generation Australians with strong roots in their African heritages, sought to create safe, artistic, and expressive environments to promote community, inclusion, and expression. It was in these spaces where music, dance, fashion were not only used as a means to express ones individuality, but also as a means to connect people to one another and freely celebrate and connect to their African roots.
